Stop the Dominion/NextEra Takeover!

South Carolinians are already struggling to keep up with rising rents, expensive electric bills, and the growing cost of everyday life. Now, another giant corporation wants to take even more control over something our families can't live without: electricity.

NextEra, a Florida-based energy company, wants to buy Dominion Energy in a $67 billion deal. If approved, the takeover would create the largest private, regulated electric utility company in the country.

We're not buying the promises of cheaper electricity. We've seen what happens when corporations get more power over our basic needs. Working families pay more while corporate executives get richer.

The Stop NextEra SC Coalition is organizing across the state to say HELL NO to this corporate power grab.

What's Happening?

NextEra Energy, the company that owns Florida Power & Light, wants to take over Dominion Energy.

Dominion already provides electricity to thousands of South Carolina households. Most customers can't choose another electric company, which means we're already stuck paying whatever rates regulators allow Dominion to charge.

Now, NextEra wants to become an even bigger and more powerful company, and its track record gives us plenty of reasons to worry.

  • Higher electric bills: NextEra's Florida utility recently won approval for a $6.9 billion rate increase, even as families struggle to afford electricity.

  • More power shutoffs: In 2024, Florida Power & Light disconnected customers at more than twice the rate Dominion did in South Carolina.

  • Big profits for executives: NextEra made more than $5 billion in profits last year while its CEO received nearly $25 million in compensation.

  • Temporary promises, long-term consequences: NextEra is offering Dominion customers about $10 off their monthly bills for two years. But Dominion already raised rates by about $12 a month. That temporary discount doesn't even cover the recent increase, and there's no guarantee our bills won't go up again.

This isn't a good deal for South Carolina families. It's a good deal for corporations looking to make even more money.

Why Are We Taking On This Fight?

Every month, tenants are forced to stretch their paychecks to cover rent, electricity, groceries, transportation, and other basic needs. When electric bills go up, that's less money to keep a roof over our heads.

For some families, one unexpectedly high electric bill can mean falling behind on rent. For others, it means choosing between keeping the lights on and buying groceries or medicine.

And many South Carolinians are paying to heat and cool homes they don't even have the power to fix. Poor insulation, broken heating and cooling systems, and old appliances can drive up electric bills while landlords fail to make needed repairs.

Electricity isn't a luxury. It's a basic need. We need it to keep our food cold, our homes safe, our medical equipment running, and our families healthy.

That's why we're taking on this fight.

We know that when corporations control the things people need to survive, they often put their profits ahead of our communities.

We're fighting for a South Carolina where everyone can afford a safe home, keep their utilities on, and have a real voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

We Can Stop This Takeover!

The Dominion/NextEra deal isn't final.

Before it can move forward, the South Carolina Public Service Commission (PSC) must review and approve it.

The PSC is the state agency responsible for overseeing utility companies and protecting the public interest. Commissioners are reviewing the proposed takeover and giving South Carolinians opportunities to speak out.

The PSC is currently scheduled to make its decision on January 29, 2027.

That means we have an opportunity to organize, speak up, and demand that commissioners reject this deal.

We need tenants, workers, families, and community members across South Carolina to make it clear that our basic needs should never come second to corporate profits.

Our Homes. Our Power. Our Future.

South Carolina tenants know what happens when powerful corporations get to make decisions about our lives without us.

We've seen it with landlords raising rents, refusing repairs, and pushing families out of their homes. And we're seeing it again as energy companies seek bigger profits and more control over our communities.

But we also know something else.

When tenants fight, we win.

We're building a movement where poor and working-class people don't just survive the decisions made by corporations and politicians. We organize together to have the power to change those decisions.

Our homes need electricity. Our families deserve stability. And our communities deserve better than another corporate takeover.
