Pack the Room for S.983
Eviction Record Sealing Subcommittee Hearing
South Carolina tenants have waited long enough. We have been emailing our legislators, sending postcards, and calling their offices non-stop.
We finally have a subcommittee hearing for S.983, the Eviction Record Sealing Bill, and we need to PACK THE ROOM.
This hearing is a critical step toward ending the practice of eviction records following people for life, even when cases are dismissed or resolved. Lawmakers need to see and feel the people most impacted by this crisis in the room.
Why This Matters
In South Carolina, an eviction filing becomes public record the moment it’s filed. That record can block families from housing, jobs, and stability for years, sometimes forever. S.983 would give tenants a real second chance.
What to Expect
- Attend a legislative subcommittee hearing at the Statehouse
- Tenants and allies showing visible, collective support for eviction record sealing
- Coordinated tenant testimony (speakers will be supported and prepped)
- A powerful, organized presence demanding movement on S.983
Tenant & Accessibility Support
SC Tenant Union is committed to making sure tenants and working-class people can be in the room. We will provide:
- Gas cards for those who need transportation support
- Carpool coordination
- Care items (fidgets, snacks, small bites)
No one should be excluded from democracy because of cost, stress, or access barriers.
Submit Written Testimony
We will be coordinating tenant speakers for this hearing, but need as many written testimonies as possible!
If you have lived experience with eviction, housing instability, or the long-term harm of eviction records, send written testimony to

Tentative Schedule
- The hearing begins at 9 am, but attendees are highly encouraged to arrive early.
Let’s show legislators what tenant power looks like. Let’s pack the room. Let’s move S983 forward together.
